These objectives can be obtained by participating in our events. It acts as an extension of the learning in the classroom for majors in atmospheric science field. For non-majors, the club offers a way to learn about the weather in the New England area. Any undergraduate student that is enrolled at the University may hold membership in the club, regardless of their major. The club requires dues to be paid before participation in club-sponsored events. Dues are $10 per year or $5 per semester. AMS meetings are held monthly during the academic year. Any special meetings are announced via E-mail. All meetings, unless otherwise stated will be held in the Meteorology Lab. The lab is located in Olney 312, on North Campus.
Here are some of the many activities we do in the AMS. First, we have the Winter Snow Contest, where members "predict" the first day of snow in Lowell totaling 1", 6", and 12" respectively, as well as the coldest temperature recorded on the roof of Ball Hall. We also take day trips to local weather stations and observatories. In past years, the AMS has visited the National Weather Service Office in Taunton, Mass., the Blue Hill Observatory, in East Milton, MA, and have been to the top of New England at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire.
In 1996, the UML AMS returned to the Lyndon State College Northeast Storms Conference in Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1998, two UML AMS members participated in the Student Intern Program at the 78th Annual Meeting of the AMS located at Phoenix, Arizona. This was the first time the UML AMS has sent members to a national conference. Since then, UML students have participated in conferences in Dallas, Texas, Long Beach, California, and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The club plans several other actitivies, features, and events. Any questions can be directed to the AMS officers or to the faculty advisor, Dr. Frank Colby in Olney 302C at (978)-934-3906.
